Historical delights from Bolonia and Tarifa.
While moving around Cadiz during the Easter break I came upon some interesting pill boxes on the Cadiz coast, Bolonia. Despite extensive research I can find not reason for the building of these pill boxes. Where they built as a defense against a sea invasion during WW2, despite the facts that Spain remained 'relatively' neutral throughout. Or were they built during the Spanish civil war? If this is the case why were they protecting their coasts when the opponents were within the same country? What do you think? The rest of the pictures are showing you the Roman ruins at Bolonia, and the 10th century castle in Tarifa. February 2014 - The 56th anniversary of the Munich air disaster

As we look forward to UNICEF day the following article can offer us food for thought about the thousands of people in need of basics such as food and perhaps give us some examples of how we can help support those less fortunate. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-26004268 January 2014 - South Sudan
Over the Christmas period we probably all ate too much and saw friends and family. I therefore found the story, to the right, about South Sudan particularity poignant and really tried to imagine over 100,000 people without a home this Christmas. Obviously, this is just one example of the people we should be remembering over the Christmas period and remembering that we are extremely lucky to live where we do! China reforms it's One Child Policy What do you think? For over 30 years over one million Chinese people have had to adhere to only being able to have one child which has led to a growing an increase in abortion if the baby is found to be a girl and therefore also inequality in the male female ratio in the country. In turn, many young men are now finding it very hard to find a wife and are being referred to as 'left over men'. Thus the Chinese government has passed an act to reform the policy. Read the article below to see if you think this will have a positive impact on the country. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-25533339 December 2013 - Merry Christmas!
Do you know the story of the Christmas Truce(s) which supposedly took place at different intervals along the front lines of WW1 on Christmas Day 1914? According to primary accounts from the time there was some laying down of arms in respect of Christmas and a meeting of minds between Enemy and Allied troops. In some places it is said that photos were taken, pleasantries exchanged and even football matches played. Every year I teach this topic as a reminder of the humanity that continued to exist despite the bloodshed across Europe from 1914-1918. Opposite is a Horrible Histories video which gives a light hearted portrayal of the Christmas Truce! Enjoy and Merry Christmas. |
